When Virtual Proctoring Goes Wrong

From Alexa to data tracking on mobile phones, the feeling of being under constant surveillance  is all too common. And now, due to COVID, watchdog technology has wormed its way into our educational institutions. Proctoring uses artificial intelligence and live proctors to watch students during tests. To expose the flaws in this system, particularly for BIPOC students from high school to grad classes, we created a simulator, a playful interactive experience though one with very serious implications for pandemic-era education, equity, and beyond. Immerse yourself in the work of YR Media reporter Zoe Harwood, as you discover firsthand what it feels like for AI to track your every move, and see how easy it is to get “busted.” Shout out to MIT, our partner in this groundbreaking initiative, that continues the momentum of our earlier investigation.
