Meet Dometi Pongo: Champion of Equitable Conversations

In the world of media and journalism, fresh perspectives and voices are central to producing powerful, change-making content. Meet YR Media Board of Directors member, Dometi Pongo, a media veteran and an innovative storyteller committed to social change.

You might recognize Dometi as the host of MTV's acclaimed Docuseries, "True Life Crime," and most recently his work as The Exhibit, a series in which seven artists compete for $100,000 and a coveted installation at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

As part of MTV’s news team, Pongo regularly witnesses the impact storytelling has on raising awareness and promoting understanding. He has lent his hosting skills to various series including “Need to Know,” an award-winning weekly analysis of trending news stories.

In addition to his work in digital journalism, he is a speaker, a multimedia consultant and a visionary producer who brings a dynamic energy to the YR Media Board of Directors, which he joined in 2021. He is also a member of YR Media’s Midwest Advisory Council, an esteemed group of professionals from the nonprofit, media, marketing, philanthropic and film sectors lending their expertise as YR Media launches its new physical hub in Chicago this September.

“The students that YR Media serves are the leaders of tomorrow, they are the pulse of their communities, and the ones who are driving change,” said Pongo who became Co-Vice Chair at the start of 2023. “Joining YR Media’s Board of Directors was not just a decision for me; it was a calling. Empowering young voices through media is a necessity for a more just and equitable society, and I am committed to pushing the organization’s mission forward in accomplishing this work.”
